Established in 1895, Earl’s Hall was at 18 Main Street, Sparta, New Jersey. The second floor was the Hall with a full stage. It was here town meetings, school graduations, production plays, and live dance music took place into the early morning hours. The ground floor had 2 dwellings: one residential; the other housed many businesses over the years, first being the A&P (Atlantic and Pacific) grocer. Unlike today’s food supermarkets, this grocer was full service. Going to the market was as easy as giving the grocer behind the counter your list and have it returned neatly in a bag or box. Earl’s Hall was later converted into two apartments. If you had the urge to peek above the new apartment ceiling, you could see the old wainscoted ceiling and the upper half of the grand stage still intact.
